A quick guide to the big three geospatial formats and how to hand off clean geometry to QGIS or ArcGIS.
Capturing field data is only half the job — it has to land cleanly in your office software. The format you export matters.
Shapefile (SHP)
The legacy workhorse. Actually a bundle of files; zip them together before sharing.
KML/KMZ
Best for Google Earth and quick visual sharing with non-GIS colleagues.
GeoJSON
The modern, web-friendly choice — a single readable file that drops straight into QGIS, ArcGIS and most web maps.
FieldCalc exports all three plus GPX and CSV, preserving attributes and coordinate reference systems.
